Distillation Experiment

Distillation Experiment
Separating a Mixture using Distillation

Aim: To separate a solute from a solvent in a solution using distillation.

Hypothesis: On my head, I think what will be left on the conical flask will be the sugars, and the evaporated gas in the cold boiling tube will turn into water.

Equipment:
  • coke zero
  • conical flask
  • heatproof mat
  • a delivery tube and bung
  • element
  • tripod
  • gauze mat
  • retort stand
  • boiling tube
Results:

Observation:
  1. When the coke(solution) started to boil and it starts to evaporate.
  2. You can see condensation on the conical flask.
  3. Evaporated coke went to the delivery tube and now it's white like water, then the delivery tube delivered the liquid to the cold boiling tube.
  4. The cold boiling tube turns the steam into waters(solvent).
  5. What left on the conical flask is the sugar.
Discussion: The solution(coke/sugar) is separated with the solvent using distillation, The solution started evaporating when it starts boiling because we heated it using the element, you can also see condensation inside the conical flask because of the heat contacted with the cool conical flask, and the evaporation travels to the delivery tube. The delivery tube sent the steam to the cold boiling tube (it's cold because we put ice outside it) and turns into a solvent(water). The solution (sugar) is left on the conical flask solid.
