Samoa - Umu | Questions

Today in Wananga we watched a video about Umu (a traditional way of cooking on Samoa) and we needed to answer questions about the video, so here it is!

What is an Umu? What does it need, what is it for?
umu-cooking - polynesia.com | blogUmu is one of a traditional way of cooking in Samoan. You need heated stone (to cook the food), banana leaves (to cover the umu so the steam can't go out), fire (to burn the coconut husk and coconut shell up), coconut husk (to heat the stone up), coconut shell (to heat the stone up), wood (to start the fire), patience.

How are traditional Samoan skills taught?
How to - Make an Umu — CoconetAs I heard on the video, their parents didn't teach them how to do it all their parents said is "watching and watching and listen".

Is there something you've experienced similar to an umu? What was it? Where did you experience it?
Sadly I haven't tried someone like that way of cooking.

What types of thing are cooked in an umu?
These include taro, fish, bananas and other fruits such as coconuts and mangoes.

Thank you for sharing your umu work to your blog. Did you find the video interesting? I never knew how to make an umu before watching this as this is different to any way that I have cooked before.

You shared lots of details in your answers and I am really pleased with the great blog you have created.
